The Other Wes Moore

In the author’s epilogue, he explained that things have not been perfect for him for years since the book’s story ended. He searched for ways to fill the hole in his heart since he grew up without a father in the home, in places where he probably shouldn’t. The author is aware that he made some tremendous mistakes along the way, but he is very grateful to have had the freedom to redeem himself and made a point to mention, “When we’re young, it sometimes seems as if the world doesn’t exist outside our city, our block, our house, our room. We make decisions based on what we see in that limited world and follow the only models available.” I agree with this statement because our childhood gives us our baseline values and beliefs, these are the things we were taught and shown as a child. Most people are the way they are due to how they were raised. Our early years play a major role in our life. However, this doesn’t define us, as we get older, we begin to realize that we have a choice in how we live our life. Regardless of the situation or upbringing, we shouldn’t put limits on our lives. Those who believe their life has no limit will take chances and try new things while also pushing themselves to achieve great things. For example, someone with a poor background can go on to achieve great things when society said they couldn’t. We all have a choice to accept our circumstances, we can choose to believe in something blindly because it’s what we have been taught, and we have the choice to question things, and change our values and beliefs if they don’t serve us any good.

Everything in life involves having to make a choice. It’s important to understand that the choice you make, regardless of how you begin life, the way you live, and the person you become, all starts with you. We are products of Our Environment, good or bad but we can choose that environment, meaning the person that we are, are a direct result of how we grew up, and the environment we were brought up in influenced the decisions we make now. People will always try to have their own opinions on one's life, but with strong guidance, we should be able to depict what is best for us.

  1. I agree with your statement, "our childhood gives us our baseline values and beliefs, these are the things we were taught and shown as a child." Our young minds are like sponges.
